Alan Wehipeihana
Alan Weihipeihana, of Ngati Raukawa and English descent, lives in Paekakariki - a village on the Kapiti Coast renowned for it's largely alternative and artistic population.
Alan is a carver, sculptor, painter and mixed media artist who works with a great many mediums and materials.
He started exprimenting with carving in limestone in 1990 and soon discovered an affinity with it.
Alan became a full time artist in 1992 at the beginning of his forties.
Within the relatively short period of time from then till now, and with no formal art training, Alan's huge body of outstanding work is testimony to his enormous natural talent and his dedication to his work.
Over the years Alan has carved two dimensional and three dimenisional works, often using oil paint as colour, layered both over and under the carving. He may also inlay or overlay metal or found objets.
Recently he has applied his unique style of carving and painting to handmade furniture, blurring the line between functional object and artwork.
Alan has exhibited in many national galleries and exhibitions and has sold works both to locals and to international purchasers.
He works full time from his studio in Paekakariki.
