Apirana Taylor

Apirana Taylor is an internationally published writer of poetry, short stories, childrens literature, novels and plays.  He is also an actor, a painter and a storyteller.

He has published five books of poetry, two poetry CDs, three books of short stories, a novel and two plays.

Apirana has held writer's residencies at Massey Unversity; Canterbury University; St. Andrew's College, Christchurch, Rangi Ruru School, Christchurch and Hagley Community College, Christchurch.

Both his poetry and short stories are studied in secondary schools, polytechnics and universities.

Apirana tours the country performing his poetry and stories, which are accompanied by music played on both traditional Maori and western instruments; at schools, universites, galleries and libraries, and also runs creative writing workshops.

Apirana lives in Paekakariki where he loves the scenery over looking the hills, the sea and Kapiti Island.  He finds his inspiration in "the life around me and within me; everything before, within and beyond an ant and a mountain."

On being self-taught, Apirana says "I attend the Apirana Taylor School of Art.  I’ve been attending this School for about thirty years and I am still a student."

Recently completed is his latest book of poetry:   ‘A Canoe in Mid Stream.’  It contains about 150 poems - many earlier poems and about fifty more recent and hitherto unpublished works.

Currently Apirana is working on two new novels.
