Jeremy Matthews
I moved to the Kapiti Coast in the mid 90’s and have always enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the area.
Interests in art and in my heritage led to enrolment at Te Wananga O Raukawa (Otaki) where I achieved a Diploma in Maori Design and Art. This included traditional Maori carving, language and history.
My previous occupations in the building trade and Regional Council provided a good background for my studies in design and art.
I now work from home using wood, stone, bone, pencil and ink. I make pieces ranging from traditional Maori carvings to contemporary pieces, garden sculpture pictures and wall hangings.
I also enjoy the challenge of creating commissions using the ideas and designs of the customer.
I entered two pieces in the Mahara Gallery Summer Delights Art Exhibition in 2008 and received a merit award for my ink drawing ‘Whitebait’.
I am inspired by all the elements of nature, ancient cultures and other artists’ work.
I live in Paraparaumu, close to the beach, which has been a great source of inspiration and fish.
