Don Wilson
Oil painter, sculptor, musician
Don started his art career at age three and hasn't stopped since. All through his childhood and youth he drew and sculpted, and then at age 14 was given a guitar which initiated his life as a musician.
After a trip to Europe and seeing the artworks there, Don started painting seriously in 1980. Upon returning to New Zealand, he joined an art group and picked up a few techniques.
Save for this, Don is self-taught. His work speaks of a love of precision, detail, colour and light. The detail speaks all the louder for that which is excluded.
Don loves the landscapes in and around Wellington, a city he finds picturesque and full of diversity, where the light and moods change constantly.
Since 1987 he has lived with his family on the Kapiti coast, a place that he finds a rich source of inspiration.
He has had two very successful solo exhibitions and has exhibited at numerous galleries in the Wellington area.
He has regularly exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts, and his paintings are represented in corporate and private collections both in New Zealand and overseas.
Don has received a Telecom Art Award, and has illustrated a children’s book.
Don has painted all manner of subject matter from landscapes to interiors to portraits.
Most of his original paintings have sold, however they are available as high quality, limited edition giclee prints.
