The Volunteers
The Band
The Volunteers are Elan Mills (vocals, keys and guitar), Daniel Neeve (guitar), Malcolm Taylor (drums and backing vocals), Marliesje Van den Assum, and Maxine Macaulay (backing vocals).
The band formed in 2005 when Elan and former member Joe got talking on a train. After that, serendipity took over and very soon the remaining members were found at various do's and gatherings.
All members live on the Kapiti Coast and love it there because of the laid-back energy and proximity to Wellington which boasts a really dyamic music scene.
Blues, funk, soul and rock 'n roll...
The Volunteers play a combination of and sometimes a fusion of funk, soul and rock 'n roll often with a rootsy rhythm lurking in the background. All of their music is original.
Elan's haunting voice and the proficiency of the band, complemented by the harmonies of the female backups, make their sound easy on the ear and create a definite urge to boogie.
The Volunteers have played at many gigs, from festivals, bars, and nightclubs to weddings and parties.
Look out for them in the Wellington region!
